Migrant Education Program

Texas Education Agency is responsible for the identification and recruitment of all eligible migratory children in the state as required by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-110, Title 1, Part C).  Sinton ISD is required to follow the requirements established for identifying and recruiting eligible children and building relationships within and among communities, institutions and migrant workers and their families.

What is a migratory child?

  • is younger than 22
  • has not graduated from high school or does not hold a GED
  • has moved or traveled from one school district to another within the preceding 36 months in order to obtain (or seek) temporary or seasonal employment in qualifying agricultural work

The purpose of the Migrant Education Program (MEP) is to ensure that migrant children fully benefit from the same free public education provided to other children.  To achieve this purpose, the MEP addresses the special educational needs of all migrant children to better enable children to succeed academically.  More specifically, the purpose of the MEP is to:

  • Support high-quality and comprehensive educational programs for migrant children in order to reduce the educational disruption and other problems that result from repeated moves;
  • Ensure that migrant children who move among the States are not penalized in any manner by disparities among the States in curriculum, graduation requirements, and State academic content and student academic achievement standards;
  • Ensure that migrant children are provided with appropriate opportunities to meet the same challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards that all children are expected to meet;
  • Design programs to help migrant children overcome educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various, health-related problems and other factors that inhibit their ability to do well in school, and to prepare them to make a successful transition to post-secondary education or employment; and
  • Ensure that migrant children benefit from State and local systemic reforms.

If you believe your child(ren) may qualify for the qualify for the Migrant Program, please contact Heidi Menchaca at 361-364-6838 or email at hmenchaca@sintonisd.net
